Young children need to be helped to develop the skills to become safer road users in the future and the power of learned behaviour should not be underplayed.  What parents and grandparents do when using the roads will underpin the future behaviour of their children – the behaviour they see, good and bad, will be copied by children as they grow up.

Demonstrating safer road use and displaying a responsible attitude to other road users will help set a solid base for children to learn from.

In addition to what they see, children benefit hugely from hearing the basis for the decisions adults make, e.g. how to choose a safer place to cross or adapting their driving line when anticipating a car pulling out in front. Talking to young children in this way helps them begin to understand the reasons why adults are making their choices and how they are considering their options.
