5-7 Years

Children of Primary school age should be encouraged to participate in the decision making processes to help them understand the range of risk factors to be considered when using the roads.

Young children should be encouraged to discuss what is a risk and why it is, e.g. driveways (emerging vehicles), parked cars (blocked vision), junctions (vehicles moving from multiple directions), etc.

The Green Cross Code is a good basis for developing safer crossing techniques but as a concept it is very involved. However the basics of understanding Stop (where), Look (where and for what) and Listen (for what) are key skills needed by all pedestrians. As important as these skills is the understanding of what children should do if they see or hear what they are looking for – what then?
