Safer places to cross

Crossing the road requires a great deal of skill and concentration. Pedestrian Crossings are there to provide points for people to cross main roads in a safe and easy way. It is therefore important to encourage children to use these crossings when trying to cross the road.

There are two types of crossings

  • Uncontrolled
  • Controlled

Uncontrolled crossings----As a pedestrian you must wait at the kerb until there is a suitable gap in the traffic to allow you to cross. The simplest type is the Traffic Island.

  • Traffic Island
  • Zebra Crossing
  • Subway
  • Footbridge
  • School Crossing Patrol

Controlled----These are Light controlled with drop kerbs, red tactile paving and audible signals.
